Breakup dynamics of capillary bridges on hydrophobic stripes

چکیده

The breakup dynamics of a capillary bridge on hydrophobic stripe between two hydrophilic stripes is studied experimentally and numerically using direct numerical simulations. formed from an evaporating water droplet wetting three neighboring chemically patterned surface. By considering the process in phase space representation, can be evaluated without uncertainty determining precise time. simulations are based Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) method implemented Free Surface 3D (FS3D). In order to construct physically realistic initial data for VOF simulation, Evolver employed calculate configuration consistent with experiments. Numerical instabilities at contact line reduced by novel discretization Navier-slip boundary condition staggered grids. cannot characterized unique scaling relationship. Instead, different stages exponents apply, structure undergoes qualitative change. final stage breakup, forms liquid thread that breaks up consistently Rayleigh-Plateau instability.

Delayed capillary breakup of falling viscous jets.

Thin jets of viscous fluid like honey falling from capillary nozzles can attain lengths exceeding 10 m before breaking up into droplets via the Rayleigh-Plateau (surface tension) instability. Using a combination of laboratory experiments and WKB analysis of the growth of shape perturbations on a jet being stretched by gravity, we determine how the jet's intact length l(b) depends on the flow ra...

Capillary breakup of discontinuously rate thickening suspensions.

Using discontinuously rate thickening suspensions (DRTS) as a model system, we show that beads-on-a-string morphologies can arise as a result of external viscous drag acting during capillary-driven breakup of a non-Newtonian fluid. To minimize the perturbative effect of gravity, we developed a new experimental test platform in which the filament is supported in a horizontal position at the surf...

A geometrical constraint for capillary jet breakup

The formation of thinning filaments is commonly observed previously to the break-up of a very viscous jet. This paper shows that a fluid under capillary forces cannot break-up through the uniform collapse of a filament. r 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. MSC: 35Q30; 35R35; 74H35

Evaporation and instabilities of microscopic capillary bridges.

The formation and disappearance of liquid bridges between two surfaces can occur either through equilibrium or nonequilibrium processes. In the first instance, the bridge molecules are in thermodynamic equilibrium with the surrounding vapor medium. In the second, chemical potential gradients result in material transfer; mechanical instabilities, because of van der Waals force jumps on approach ...
